A Case of Norwegian Scabies Resambling a Exfoliative Dermatitis in a Patient of Eldercare Hospital

Abstract

|
Norwegian scabies is a crusted rash caused by massive infesstation with the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. The characteristic skin lesions in this form are gross scaling and hyperkeratotic plaque, especially on the hands, feet, scalp, face and nails with varing degrees of pruritus. It is often seen in the physically or mentally handicapped, immunocompromised, and institutionalized persons. Herein, we report a case of Norwegian scabies in a 75-year-old eldercare hospital patient who presented widespread, pruritic, scaly erythematous, exfoliative dermatitis like patches and macules on the whole body for 6 months. Application of a mineral oil preparation from hyperkeratotic areas showed numerous scabies mites and eggs. He, his family and eldercare hospital members were treated with 10% crotamitoc ceram for two weeks and shows no recurrence until now.
